Hello my name is Ti’Ara and I’m pursuing a Bachelors degree in Communication at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. I joined Sigma Theta Psi sorority my first year at UNLV. I’ve had the opportunity to intern for the Walt Disney Company in their College Program, and it truly was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. My dream job would to work for the Disney company in their Fairytale wedding department. I love to travel and I dream of traveling the world. I’m a huge foodie, I love to try new and different foods. I love to cook and bake and spend a lot of my time in the kitchen coming up with new recipes or mastering old and traditional recipes. I would love to one day write my own cookbook. I also enjoy makeup, going to concerts, festivals, working out, sports (go Boston and Roll Tide), going to brunch with my friends and all things cats (I have two siamese cats).
About two years ago I embarked on a journey of health, fitness and falling in love with my body and soul. I’ve become addicted to the fitness life and have loss over 80lbs. I’m currently an ambassador for my gym and I’m a legionnaire for 1stPhorm Supplement and Nutrition company. I’m currently working on my level 1 Precision Nutrition certification. If I don’t end up working within the communication or public relations field, I would like to one day become a certified nutritionist and trainer. I’m a very passionate person and I really love helping people.
My media related interests would be on the social media spectrum of things. I’m really interested in social media platforms, social media influencers and how media is used for marketing and branding. Some questions I would like to learn throughout this course is how social influencing became popular, where technology and the media could take us in the future, how to effectively use social media for marketing, branding and advertising and what makes a good media content.
The advertising industry helps generate branding and focuses on brand loyalty. Companies use advertising to target a select audience and market their product in an appealing fashion. Many companies use different forms of advertising across all of the social media platforms. Companies will advertise on networks for TV programs, radio, movies, websites, social media sites, news print, magazines and billboards. Advertising helps customers build a sense of familiarity with a company and loyalty. Companies use advertising to not only make a brand for themselves but also market their products in hopes to make profit. Advertisements can help with building credibility and allows you to control content that appeals to different types of audience.
Suave 1949 Beauty Product Advertisement from True Confessions
This advertisement for the time period was appealing because during that time period a lot of hair products were surfacing that took away from the normal hair washing. This advertisement stands out to me because it shows a stick figure as a before picture. Meaning why would you want to be a dull stick figure when you could be a lush beautiful woman? The advertisement uses color to appeal to the lips and hair. The advertisement uses stereotyping on what the beauty standards are at the time. They use a model in the advertisement as someone who uses the product. The advertisement appeals to your emotions. It makes you want to go out and buy the product because it will make you feel and look beautiful. Every girl wants to feel and look beautiful. The advertisement also focuses on complimenting the customer. The advertisement talks about how by using the product, you’ll be able to feel and look more beautiful. There is also endorsement because the ad talks about beauticians recommending the product. During the time beauticians knew all things beauty. If you were considered a beautician you knew all things beauty and you knew how to beautify not only yourself but others. Finally the ad uses a form of bandwagon promotions. The ad uses bandwagon because it talks about how beauticians like mentioned before use and would recommend it. If they recommend it, you should buy and use it.
This ad values and ideologies are geared toward beauty. It makes the standard of beauty change and it brings fourth the importance of beauty. Having this ad showcases that you need this product in order to feel and look beautiful. Using any other product won’t get you that true beauty definition. It also doesn’t use average women in their ad. It uses a woman that is noticeably beautiful. By using someone more attractive than the average person, it in a way lies to the customers. The woman in the picture is all dolled up to look nice and better than usual. The ad shows that using this product will get that result when it the end you have to do more than just use the product being advertised.
1950’s ad for suave from This Week publication
This ad is more on the conservative side because the woman in the ad isn’t a seductive or sexy as the first ad. This ad is still showcasing the product and the beauty industry but it doing so in a more tasteful manner. It also shows a couple in the ad and how this product will make your significant other all starry eyed. This ad is focusing on a romantic whim. Meaning the if you use the product your significant other will be more happy and in love with you.
In conclusion ads from 1949’s-1950’s haven’t been that much off from the ads today. Especially within the beauty industry. Today models and influencers are used to showcase beauty products. They also do a lot of photoshopping. Making the person using the product more appealing. Which in the end persuades you to buy the product because you want to look like the person in the ad. A lot of the ad techniques used in these two ads are used in ads today. Companies still want to showcase their products and build loyalty among their customers.

In the article “From land mines to cancer, animals’ incredible sense of small is saving lives”, written by The Independent through a creative commons license that was taken from Mosaic by Emma Young. In this article is talks about how animals are being tested to sniff out cancer and other diseases. They are testing out animals from rats to dogs, and the animals have had success in being able to sniff for certain diseases. A trial is being taken place in Tanzania, where they are testing on rats to be able to sniff out tuberculosis. Dogs are being able to sniff out cancer and are being tested within the UK and United States.

In this photo it showcases a laboratory in Tanzania that is currently testing rats to sniff out tuberculosis as well as being able to sniff out landmines. The rats are being provided with scents of landmines and articles of clothing from people with tuberculosis. This picture is a great picture to use because it sets the setting of the article. It’s inside of a laboratory in the country of Tanzania, which is where the testing of landmines and tuberculosis is being held within the article I’ve read.

There has been a huge issue with landmines and people stumbling upon them unexpectedly. Bart Weetjens upon graduating from university and former product designer, was in Tanzania trying to figure out the landmine situation. He was coming up with ways to be able to detect where there is a landmine. He remembered having pet rats as a child and knew how intelligent they were. So he decided to test out rats with being able to find landmines. I picked this photo as a medium shot because this is another location where the article is taking place and talking about. Between the search for the landmines and laboratory.

The rats that are being tested to sniff out landmines and tuberculosis use the scent to find what they are looking for. When the rats are sniffing out landmines, the are harnessed and brought to suspected areas. They are then let go to sniff around and find the exact location. When sniffing out tuberculosis, the rats will sniff items to get the sent. They will then be taken in to sniff items of those suspected with tuberculosis. I picked this photo as the portrait because it paints a picture of the main character being talked about in the article.
(AFP/Getty)The Independent Credited Dog testing to sniff out cancer and other serious illnesses
Aside from the rats being able to detect landmines and tuberculosis, dogs are currently being trained to sniff out cancer and other serious illnesses around the world. Dogs are able to sniff out if something is wrong with you. They are taught to dictate what smell goes to what. If someone is suspected of cancer or another serious illness the dog is brought in to sniff the person. If the dog sniffs something that could be a potential cancer or serious illness the dog will lay ride down and cross their paws. I picked this photo as captioning the detail because this photo shows how the dogs learn how to sniff for certain things. The smells are located on the plates and as the pass the dog, the dog will let them know which one had cancer or another serious illness.

There are many different ways the dogs are tested to find cancer and other serious illnesses. They are tested with humans wearing certain scents, they are tested with different machines and they are tested using different layouts with different scents. I picked this photo as my action photo because it showcases the dog sniffing and finding something.
I picked these images because they either went along with the original article I read or were in other related articles. These photos convey the overall story because they are showcasing what is going on and what they are finding with these tests. It shows the animals in action and also shows what type of testing they are enduring. It also shows that none of the animals are being harmed. If I had different photos or arranged the photos differently the story would change because it wouldn’t go along with what I’m exactly talking about or trying to convey. Some of the ethical concerns could be if using random photos, could take away from the story or take away from what you are trying to convey. If it is taken away from that, than the truths of the story could be depicted and people might not understand fully what is going on. Ethical concerns with the images I selected could be not properly placing them within the article and not preparing citing them. Visual reporting can be impactful because it paints what the overall story is trying to convey. It works for those who are visual learners as well. Those that need visuals to understand something, could better understand what the article is if conveyed through pictures. With the way media is going and technology advancing, visual story telling could take stories to whole new levels and platforms.
